Dramatic Shortage of Armored Humvees

U.S. and Iraqi soldiers battling insurgents in Iraq now face a
shortage of more than 8,000 armored Humvees, according to U.S. Central
Command.
Demand for the heavily armored transport vehicles increased
substantially beginning in August 2003, when unarmored humvees became
a prime target of insurgents' homemade bombs and rocket-propelled
grenades.
Stepped-up attacks by insurgents, as well as increasing numbers of
trained Iraqi forces in need of supplies, have caused a shortage.
Over the last four months, demand has outpaced supply and the Army's
need has surged by 84 percent.
